ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat a vast array of ailments from musculoskeletal injuries to cancer. The basic principal is that of inserting extremely thin, sterilized, disposable needles into specific anatomical locations along what are called meridians or channels. These meridians correlate with nerve/vascular/lymphatic pathways and also connective/soft tissue regions such as muscles, tendons and ligaments which ultimately connect to all areas of the body; the surface layers such as the skin and muscles but also the deeper levels such as the internal organs.

Acupuncture needles are used to help the body get back towards homeostasis by influencing the physiological and cellular functioning of the body.

I spent the entire month of November going to see doctors trying to figure out what was wrong with me. The left side of my body would tingle and go numb with no explanation. The doctors said it was just stress that nothing could be done and not to think about it. Trying to to think about it made me over think and be looking for things I didn't feel the day before.

It wasn't until seeing Dr. Barry that he was able to right away tell me what was wrong and put my mind at ease. He is very caring and knows just how to explain things to you. I would go in every time with a symptom I was sure was something else and he was able to break it down and explain things to me. I was able to spend my Christmas at peace enjoying myself without the constant symptoms. After every appointment the symptoms would be less and less.

Before going to Dr. Barry I couldn't sleep, now I sleep through the night.I never truly believed acupuncture would do the trick but after one time I am sure of the outcomes it can bring. I will always recommend people to Dr. Barry. I can't thank him enough!!!!!!!

After three weeks of painful muscle cramps in my back I went to see Dr. Barry. I thought that the pain appeared to be associated with carpal tunnel syndrome and computer use. It would start as soon as I picked up the mouse and would become so painful that I was unable to do any work at all! Over the counter pain relievers had zero effect and I was concerned about how many I was taking. The stabbing pain would follow me all day.

After one acupuncture session my back went through phases of discomfort but also less pain. Each day a little better. His manner is polite, he asks pertinent questions and makes appropriate observations. He had suggested that two or three sessions might be required. After one week and the second session, the pain was gone! Even as I write this there is no pinching or stabbing pain, I am completely comfortable.

I am so glad that we have such a competent healer in Hollister!

It took me 3 years to take my oncologist's advice to try acupuncture after a health issue caused nerve damage the length of the left side of my body that left me with chronic tingling, deep pain and constricted muscles when I exercised. I am so glad I did and feel I couldn't have found a more compassionate, dedicated person than Dr. Barry to help me on a path to healing.

From the very first needle he placed in my body, there was immediate relief. I've been receiving treatment for a few months now and the only way to describe how I feel is whole again. The 20 minutes you are left in the room is the perfect way to unwind and meditate, too, which is an added bonus.

If you've been advised to try acupuncture for your health issue and are hesitant, don't be. It's a completely natural way to heal that feels like a miracle, and Dr. Barry puts you at ease right away. Hollister is very lucky to have him in the community.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does acupuncture treat?

Every system of the body can benefit from an acupuncture treatment. A very partial list of conditions treated would include disorders of musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, gynecological, hormonal, cardiological, lymphatic, neurological and urinary origin.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture improves blood flow throughout the body in general but more specifically to the anatomical regions in which it is done. This is important because in your blood is where various biochemical substances such as anti inflammatories, steroids, hormones, immunoglobulins and numerous other agents reside and perform their functions. When circulation is improved tissue repair is enhanced and inflammation processes are reduced. Somatovisceral relationships between acupuncture points and deeper structures such as organs and glands have been extensively researched to assist the practitioner with diagnosing and treating pathology at these areas as well.

Acupuncture helps to balance and regulate neurotransmitters such as serotonin, epinephrine and dopamine. Endorphins are released during acupuncture as well to help modify the bodies response to pain. Research has shown that acupuncture calibrates effected neural feedback loops along with the actions of neuro-spinal pathways to help the spine and brain communicate and regulate pain.

What is an acupuncture treatment like?

During your first visit to our clinic you can expect a complete examination and evaluation, along with a thorough health history. Once we have reviewed all pertinent information, a diagnosis and treatment plan are determined. The patient lies on the treatment table and the doctor performs acupuncture. Once all of the acupuncture needles are in the desired locations, the patient remains on the table for 15-40 minutes depending on the above factors. The lights are usually dimmed as the patient listens to soothing, meditative music. Occasionally the patient will sit in a chair if they are unable to be on the table.

After the time period has lapsed the doctor returns to remove the acupuncture needles and give any necessary advice such as nutritional, exercise or home therapy suggestions.

Does acupuncture hurt?

A licensed acupuncturist uses hair thin, sterilized/disposable needles for painless insertion.

How long will the results last?

The duration of the results is relative to many factors. These include but are not limited to; how long you have been experiencing discomfort, getting treatment on a schedule that the practitioner has recommended and following the advice given for at home work, i.e. stretching, dietary advice and lifestyle modifications.
